Recent climatic change and catastrophic geomorphic processes in mountain environments

چکیده
Climatic warming during the last 100-150 years has resulted in a significant glacier ice loss from mountainous areas of the world. Certain natural processes which pose hazards to people and development in these areas have accelerated as a result of this recent deglaciation. These include glacier avalanches, landslides and slope instability caused by glacier debuttressing, and outburst floods from moraineand glacier-dammed lakes. In addition, changes in sediment and water supply induced by climatic warming and glacier retreat have altered channel and floodplain patterns of rivers draining high mountain ranges. The perturbation of natural processes operating in mountain environments, caused by recent climatic warming, ranges from tens of decades for moraine-dam failures to hundreds of years or more for landslides. The recognition that climatic change as modest as that of the last century can perturb natural alpine processes has important implications for hazard assessment and future development in mountains. Even so, these effects are probably at least an order of magnitude smaller than those associated with late Pleistocene deglaciation ca. 15,000 to 10,000 years ago.

The Response of Fluvial Systems to Large Flood Events
In the summer of 2001, an intense thunderstorm in southeastern Caspian Sea triggered a catastrophic flood in the Madarsoo basin . Use of methods including high-resolution aerial photographs and satellite images interpretation, multi-date mapping, hydraulic calculations and field observations made possible the documentation of the geomorphic impacts on the Madarsoo River and its tributaries. Geo...

In the desert of Abarkoh Basin, Central Iran, the influence of playa-lake level fluctuations on recent sedimentation mode of a terminal ephemeral fluvial-fan system and adjacent lacustrine/aeolian sediments of a playa fringe environment has been investigated. The surface geomorphology-sedimentology and its relationship with shallow subsurface sediments along a >25 km transect, has been studied....
متن کاملMountain Climates and Climatic Change: An Overview of Processes Focusing on the European Alps
This contribution provides an overview of the intricacies of mountain climates, particularly as they pertain to the European Alps. Examples will be given of issues that are related to climatic change as observed in the Alps during the course of the 20th century, and some of the physical mechanisms that may be responsible for those changes. The discussion will then focus on the problems related ...
متن کاملThe Importance of Seasonally Frozen Ground (SFG) in Mountain Environments To Hydrological, Ecological, and Geomorphic Systems
OVERVIEW There has been little research on the importance of Seasonally Frozen Ground (SFG), including permafrost, to many of the major processes in mountain environments. One reason has been the difficulty in measuring and estimating the areal extent of surface frost that occurs under seasonal snowpacks. Here we present preliminary evidence from the Colorado Front Range suggesting that SFG has...
متن کاملIs climate change responsible for changing landslide activity in high mountains?
Climate change, manifested by an increase in mean, minimum, and maximum temperatures and by more intense rainstorms, is becoming more evident in many regions. An important consequence of these changes may be an increase in landslides in high mountains. More research, however, is necessary to detect changes in landslide magnitude and frequency related to contemporary climate, particularly in alp...
